Determining Your Best Option After Extraction

The replacement of an extracted tooth is an important step to make sure you maintain healthy bones in your mouth.  Neglecting and not replacing the tooth can cause bone density loss.

When a tooth is not replaced, the bones in your mouth weaken due to a gap being present where your extracted tooth was.  This gap can also cause shifting, resulting in discomfort and a crooked smile or even trouble eating if you don’t replace your missing tooth.

Good News!  You have options for replacing your extracted tooth, either temporarily or permanently.  We have provided a list that includes the pros and cons which will help you discover which tooth restoration option might be right for you.

Tooth Replacement Options After Tooth Extraction

Flipper Tooth – A flipper tooth is a retainer that can be taken in and out that has one or more prosthetic teeth attached.  The biggest pro of a flipper tooth is that it’s one of the least expensive options and it’s also a relatively quick fix.  On the downside, a flipper tooth is only meant to be temporary, thus it can break more easily than other options.  Additionally, it may be uncomfortable to wear, and some people could have an allergic reaction to the material of the retainer.

Removable Partial Dentures – Partial dentures are a viable option for replacing missing teeth.  Removable partial dentures are natural-looking teeth that sit on a pink base resembling gums.  Also, a relatively inexpensive option that is easy to maintain.  Daily rinsing is required and keeping them dry during sleep.  More teeth can be added if needed in the future and can be adjusted if they become sore or uncomfortable.  However, they do not have the same natural appearance as other permanent options.

Dental Bridge – A Dental Bridge is designed to use the two teeth on either side of your gap for support for the prosthetic tooth to fill that gap and cannot be removed without the assistance of a dentist.  The design increases durability and lasts longer than temporary options while being less invasive.  Unfortunately, the teeth on either side must be filled down for the affixation of the bridge, which requires extreme care while cleaning dental bridges.

Dental Implant – Dental implants are the most costly and complicated but also the most effective solution for missing teeth. In fact, a dental implant looks just like a real tooth and can last a lifetime.  Dental implants require multiple trips to Summerfield Family Dentistry.

First, the dentist will replace the roots of your missing tooth with dental screws. You will need to wait for the root implants to heal and fuse to your jawbone.  Second, once your dental implant has healed, your dentist will fix a crown to the screws as its anchor to finalize your dental implant.

Though dental implants are the most expensive option for extracted tooth restoration, it is the most permanent and reliable. So, while the time and money it takes can be downsides to the procedure, it might be worth the effort for a natural-looking tooth to last a lifetime.
